Learning to see opportunities in adversity has helped leaders think, learn and develop themselves. When you discover that the things blocking your path are actually what strengthen you, you become stronger than ever.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2008, like all other businesses, JPMorgan Chase, chaired and led by CEO Jamie Dimon, faced an unprecedented major financial crisis. No one could predict where the financial industry or the American economy was heading\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Indra Nooyi, PepsiCo's chairwoman and CEO, left her native India at 23 to study and work in the US. There, she always felt like a \u201cfish out of water,\u201d struggling to adapt to her new environment\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Brian Cornell, Chairman and CEO of Target, had a difficult childhood. Losing his father when he was very young, Brian had to work many jobs to earn a living\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

And the Former CEO of Yum. He Grew Up in Mobile Homes and Received an Equally \u2018Nomadic\u2019 Education\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

What do they have in common? To them, adversity is an asset and a competitive advantage because they choose persistence and learn everything they can from it. That is how they succeed.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and Crisis Management<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

In 2008, Dimon faced a far-reaching financial crisis threatening the entire company and the whole United States. During that time, he was under enormous pressure to balance risks and their potential effects on JPMorgan Chase and the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n

Facing this adversity, \u201cwhat I tried to do was make sure the crisis did not seriously damage JPMorgan,\u201d Dimon said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dimon learned several important lessons during this period. He says: \u201cYou must have preparations in place before a crisis hits. You cannot start a war without an army. We produced a series of rigorous, disciplined, highly detailed reports to understand trends in the financial situation.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the 2008 crisis, Dimon reportedly canceled most long-distance trips. He spent more time at his desk to ensure work continued normally and unforeseen problems could be addressed promptly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dimon was widely praised by the business community for his skillful leadership during the crisis. One of his proudest moments was acquiring Bear Sterns for an astonishingly low 2 USD per share.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI called a group of our leaders across the country at 10 p.m. on Thursday. Bear Sterns could fail, and we would try to save it over the weekend. At that point, hundreds of JPMorgan employees came to work on Saturday. The following night, there were thousands,\u201d Dimon recalled. That is also the story of the JPMorgan chief's success\u2014a story of overcoming adversity from which much can be learned.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi and her story of culture shock<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Moving from India to the United States to attend Yale School of Management presented many challenges for Indra Nooyi. With a changed environment and everything unfamiliar, adapting to America took considerable time and determination.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I arrived in the United States, the first feeling that swept over me was loneliness,\u201d Nooyi said, \u201cbecause I had never been abroad before. And, you know, it took me some time to adjust to everything. I am vegetarian, and at the time I did not know how to find vegetarian food in New Haven. Those first few weeks were frightening. I wanted to jump on a plane and return to India immediately.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But the unfamiliarity of her early days in America gradually faded. Little by little, international students at Yale built a multicultural environment. Within her first month, Nooyi had adapted to her new surroundings and become a true \u2018American.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Another way Nooyi learned to connect was through baseball. She shared: \u201cI used to play cricket when I was in India. When I came to the United States, I had to participate in, learn, or support a sport. It was 1978, the year the baseball team won big. So I often sat in my dorm room and the common room listening to friends explain baseball. I fell in love with the Yankees, and that love has lasted to this day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Learning to love the Yankees and baseball helped Nooyi fit in and connect with others. When she moved into a new environment, she chose to embrace its culture to adapt and form connections. For Nooyi, adversity was therefore also an opportunity to strengthen herself and find her way into a business career.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Target CEO Brian Cornell: Rising from an unhappy childhood<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Looking only at Cornell\u2019s background, no one would imagine he could become a CEO. He grew up in truly difficult circumstances: his father died early and his mother was constantly ill. From childhood, he worked many jobs to get by, from mowing lawns and shoveling snow to washing trucks. Looking back at his childhood, many would surely say, \u201cThere is no future for this boy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Brian Cornell shared: \u201cFrom childhood, I realized there were only 3 ways to overcome your circumstances and move forward. They are:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 At school, grades are the measure of assessment. No one cares who my father is or how much money I have.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 In sports, people also focus only on scoring efficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 At work, your abilities determine who you are.<\/span><\/p>\n

Every playing field is level. So I no longer feel sorry for myself because of my difficult early years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

From then on, Cornell worked harder than ever and seized every opportunity. He said the road was neither magical nor smooth, but full of obstacles. In the end, Cornell succeeded. Instead of lamenting his unfortunate circumstances, he resolved to turn adversity into an advantage.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. And finally, my story: A \u201cnomadic childhood\u201d among mobile homes<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Let me end with my own story. Because of my father\u2019s work, my family had to live in a trailer and move every three months. Although I did not realize it at the time, those moves taught me many useful things and shaped me into the CEO I am today.<\/span><\/p>\n

One major challenge I faced was having to get to know the children in a new place every time we moved. My mother always encouraged me to take the initiative to make friends in each small town our family moved to.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a result, I quickly learned to judge people: who was good and whom to avoid. This skill became a major advantage when I later became CEO. Here too, adversity gave me an exceptional strength.<\/span><\/p>\n
