Who knows—an opportunity may be within your reach:

1. How Much Do You Truly Dare to Fail?

A business or startup team may face market risks often given the euphemistic label of ‘failure.’ Some people justify their failures by saying they have never failed, because they learned from every setback, but failure is still failure; do not avoid admitting it.

Most startup teams tell investors they are ready to accept failure. Of course—when you fail, if you do not accept it, is the neighbor supposed to bear it for you?!?!?! The real issue here is how far you dare to embrace failure.

Will you choose to Continue for a higher reward if you answer correctly, but risk returning to 0 if you answer incorrectly, or take your current reward?

Will you spend the money you saved over 5 years as an employee, dare to mortgage your home, risk losing money borrowed from your parents, or stake close friendships by promising a bright future to friends who join you, knowing you could lose even your closest friends? The greater your determination, the greater your ability to persuade investors.

Enough beating around the bush: investors want to know whether you have imagined losing everything and starting again from nothing, and how prepared you are for that situation.

2. What is the purpose of implementing your idea?

Do not begin with hollow answers such as ‘I want to save the world’ or ‘Nobody has thought of this idea, so I have to do it’. What investors need to know is your true purpose.

Other reasons may be more convincing: perhaps you want to start a business because you cannot find a job anywhere. Opening a sidewalk iced-tea stall or selling underwear on Facebook is also entrepreneurship. It need not be grand; the main reason is that you want to earn a living.

You may also start a business because you want to become wealthy, a tycoon, or simply have more money than you can spend, or to take charge of your destiny and mission and become your own boss, as people in multilevel marketing do. That is a reason too; at least it is practical. Whatever it is, state your true purpose. No purpose is truly bad if it becomes a powerful motivation for your success.

No billion-dollar business suddenly becomes a billion-dollar success overnight, and billionaires also experience many failures with their indigestible business models. First you need to make a living, then sustain and develop.

Ultimately, your business is about improving society and serving the community, not pursuing profit. Distinguish long-term and short-term goals. This shows that traders may pursue profit regardless of economic consequences for future generations or long-term relationships, whereas entrepreneurs create lasting social value through their businesses.

3. How much is enough for you?

Making money is something you must do sooner or later. Your business model must therefore generate positive cash flow. However, do not chase immediate profit at the expense of long-term benefits. A lengthy business plan filled with figures to persuade investors about your journey, along with near-perfect financial projections for capturing a billion-dollar market, is among the most delusional things I know.

Of course, once you reach floor 10, you may eventually reach floor 20. But do not talk about floor 5 when you cannot even climb to floor 2 and may be about to slide into the basement. A moderate, practical ambition achievable in the short term is what investors most want to hear about.

No investor stays with you for life. Even if they wanted to, you might not, right? Investing is a process of moving from a lower to a higher level. In principle, they also need profits, which are only realized when they exit their investments.

Know what is enough.

4. Why not another investor?

In other words, are you praying in every direction? When ill, any healer seems good: you combine Eastern and Western medicine, and your body is then bombarded by all kinds of drugs, many with side effects. Before choosing an investor, understand them thoroughly through outside sources. During direct negotiations, also determine whether the investor is the right companion for you.

Such a clear assessment helps both sides truly understand each other and commit to moving forward together. Hold off on discussing money, because capital is extraordinarily complex; you whether you want USD 1 million or USD 2 million is not the issue now, when you have yet to convince investors of “Why did you choose me?” Then they will tell you, “Why did I choose you?”

Choosing an investor is like a CEO choosing the right person for an important company role, or a young man choosing the woman who will wear a bridal gown on their wedding day. You cannot choose just anyone, nor can you rush.

5. Do you know about the theory of evolution?

I wonder if anyone failed biology, probably not. Anyone who has studied Darwin's theory of evolution understands that things change from lower to higher levels over time. You may ask what evolution has to do with business or technology. Of course it does, and very closely.

Your business must evolve. It is fine to start with the most rudimentary business model, in a very niche market, with highly specific operations. What matters is whether you can see the larger market outside after you transform. It is like metamorphosis: from caterpillar to pupa, then the moth bites through its cocoon and begins a new life cycle.

If you remain too loyal to the old model, change slowly or lack a vision for change, raising capital will be difficult. No large business stays loyal only to the business model it had at the very beginning.

A handmade bakery can become an export bakery manufacturer using the world's most advanced production line and worth hundreds of millions of USD. A small neighborhood bánh mì shop can become a global franchise chain. A brocade and silk business can become a powerful fashion empire with a global brand.

A tiny chip for ordinary calculations can become a technology company producing chips used in most mobile devices today. Of course, you cannot simply persuade investors that you will turn from a lizard into a dinosaur in ten years. Every piece of evidence must be convincing, consistent with the present circumstances, and something you can demonstrate.

Are you willing to change your business model? How will you change it? When will you do so? Who will join you, and what percentage of feasibility does the model have? Prepare answers to these questions before your team meets investors.

Source: Based on Trí Thức Trẻ

Chương trình liên quan tại YUP Education: X-FundUp – khóa học gọi vốn «Giải Mã Cơ Chế Vốn» · The Journey – lộ trình phát triển doanh nhân

CHINH PHỤC CÁC NHÀ ĐẦU TƯ? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> HÃY HIỂU VỀ HỌ!
