The iMac was the first major computer product that allowed Steve Jobs to make a strong impression after becoming Apple's CEO in 1997. This helped revive all of Apple after the company had nearly gone bankrupt in the 90s.

Cook also felt that he and Jobs would work well together, so he followed his intuition and joined Apple.

‘All that flashed through my mind at that moment was: I will do it. I will give it everything,’ Cook told Charlie Rose. ‘Then I heard something urging me: “Go West, young man,”’ Cook added. (‘Go West, young man’ is a famous quotation by Horace Greeley encouraging young men to explore the ‘promised land’ of the American West. Today, it commonly encourages people to explore new and promising opportunities and achieve great things – Editor.)

So how did Steve Jobs persuade Tim Cook to think that way and decide to work for Apple? Below is Tim Cook's answer in an interview with host Charlie Rose last weekend:

Charlie Rose: When you accepted Apple's offer in 1998, you reportedly had many attractive offers from other companies. Why did you choose Apple? Could you reveal how Steve Jobs persuaded you?

Tim Cook: It was a truly interesting meeting. I had a long phone conversation with Apple's representative, the ‘headhunter’ Jobs had assigned to contact me. I initially said no: I was doing very well at Compaq and thought I was happy there. But they kept calling. Finally I thought, ‘Why not go out and meet in person?’ Steve had created the entire industry I worked in, and I very much wanted to meet him. So I decided to do so.

Charlie Rose: Did you not think about anything that could go wrong then?

Tim Cook: Yes. I simply thought I would go and meet him. Then suddenly Steve Jobs began discussing his strategy and vision, what he had done and was doing to focus entirely (100%) on consumers.

While most people in technology decided they could not spend too much on creating groundbreaking services, storage or features for consumers, Jobs did the opposite. At the time, I kept thinking this might be a poor strategy; was he making too risky a move? He had only two outcomes: win everything or lose it all. He did something profoundly different.

He then told me a little about design, which really interested me more, and described in detail what would later be called the iMac. His persuasive, enthusiastic way of speaking when it was just the two of us truly impressed me, and I decided I could work with this man.

When I considered Apple's problems at the time, I thought I could contribute something to the company. Working with Steve Jobs was one of the greatest blessings of my life. That was what changed my thinking. I would work for Apple. A voice urged me: “Go west, young man.” I was still young then, and I had been chosen to do it. So I would follow my heart.

According to Đinh Thơm

Investment Forum
