During traditional Lunar New Year celebrations, grandparents, parents, relatives and children wish each other abundant blessings (good fortune), wealth (possessions) and longevity (long life and health). How do blessings, wealth and longevity shape—and get shaped by—our lives? Are they related to business matters such as startup capital? If so, how can they become more abundant, complete and prosperous each day, making our lives and work ever smoother, more prosperous and successful?

Note: “phước” here can be understood as synonymous with “phúc,” as in “phước lành” and “phúc lành” (blessings), or “thật có phước” and “thật có phúc” (truly fortunate).

According to Venerable Tuyên Hóa, born in 4/1918 and passed away in 6/1995, an eminent monk deeply respected and cherished in Western countries such as the United States and Eastern countries such as China and Vietnam, who taught that:

“The secret to increasing blessings, prosperity, and longevity without wishing for anything at all:

-Wear Less, Gain Blessings,
-Eat Less, Gain Longevity,
-Sleep Less, Gain Fortune.

Phước

To gain more blessings, reduce indulgence and do not focus excessively on yourself. Use things in moderation; do not chase designer goods just because wealthy people have them, because expensive luxuries quickly exhaust your blessings. Keep using things that still work or give them to others rather than discarding them for new ones. Practice thrift to preserve blessings and avoid wasting money and possessions. If you have money to spare, help those suffering more than you. Over time, this accumulates merit and blessings for yourself.

When people are born, heaven assigns each a fixed amount of food. If we consume that food at an average rate, it will run out in 60 years. But if we eat less, it may last 80 years, and we will live longer without illness. Conversely, if we eat richly and consume more than our true allotment, the food heaven gave us will run out early. By age 40, our real supply will be exhausted, and the rest of our lives will be spent in poverty and hardship, or in wealth but with illnesses requiring many dietary restrictions, no longer free to eat as before. If we eat luxuriously early on, we will have to eat poorly later. Eating more meat means more illness; most of the illnesses that come to us enter through what we eat and drink.

Lộc

To increase prosperity, sleep less, work diligently and spend time doing things useful to society and others. Sacrifice yourself for meaningful contributions to the country and leave useful things for future generations, and prosperity will grow. Those who know contentment are often joyful; the patient are always at peace.”
Through these wise teachings, we can see that increasing blessings, prosperity and longevity is not so difficult, is it? These do not depend only on well-wishes from family, relatives and friends at holidays, Tết or birthdays. They are determined first by each person’s way of life, habits and decisions every day, hour and moment. Our everyday habits of eating, sleeping, shopping and treating other people, animals and objects strongly influence how we run a startup.

Some people regret a few grains of rice or crumbs of bread dropped on the ground, yet readily spend money eating in restaurants or, more commonly, casual food stalls. They diminish their blessings through wasteful habits, failing to restrain their appetite for fine food and clothes instead of valuing dependable necessities. They diminish their prosperity because eating out costs two to three times as much as cooking at home, and their longevity because roadside food—and even food in many restaurants—may use ingredients of unclear origin, careless preparation, excessive flavorings, preservatives and chemical colors and aromas that look appealing and tempt the palate but do the stomach no good. It is therefore easy to infer that such people, if running a startup, would likely spend inefficiently, pinch pennies while missing enormous opportunities and sums of money, and fall into countless temptations and traps in business.

12 effective ways to save money

You may think this is overly tight-fisted and ungenerous, but consider these 12 ways to save every penny from the great investor Warren Buffett, one of today's richest billionaires:

1. Prepare your own breakfast and lunch instead of buying them on the way to work. Cook extra dinner the night before and save some for the next day.

2. Buy seasonal food and take advantage of supermarket discounts.

3. Buy in bulk and refrigerate food.

4. Do not go to the supermarket when you are hungry.

5. Cook for yourself instead of ordering food from shops. Eat at restaurants only on special occasions.

6. When ordering at a restaurant, choose something you cannot cook as well at home.

7. Prepare your own ice cream. You will save a lot by buying your favorite flavor when it is discounted at the supermarket.

8. Bring coffee to work.

9. Bring a bottle of water to drink instead of buying bottled water.

10. Unless the restaurant offers free soda, bring your own drinking water.

11. Have wine or a cocktail before going out to eat instead of ordering them at the restaurant. A glass of wine at a restaurant often costs as much as an entire bottle.

12. When your tube of toothpaste or shaving cream is nearly empty, cut it open and use what remains.

So can you see it clearly now?
