Surely the cheaper one. They do not know how the more expensive melon was produced or how it differs from the cheaper one.

This reasoning led Nguyễn Minh Nhân to seek out his colleagues to persuade them of the proposal to make clean agriculture interacts with customers.

His approach is to have the farm propagate seedlings, then, after customers order trees, grow and care for them until they bear fruit before delivering them. Each tree comes with a complete ‘record,’ including the customer's nameplate and planting date… The farm regularly emails customers weekly updates on growth and development.

The farm also organizes 1 garden visit every month, allowing customers to care for their produce firsthand.

Nguyễn Minh Nhân shared, idea this “one-of-a-kind” agricultural venture emerged when he saw many people enthusiastic about the Happy Farm game. Experiencing planting, tending plants and harvesting produce is truly exciting. “What is certain, however, is that customers feel confident about the products and do not question their value.”, he affirmed.

Born in Hải Dương in 1984, Nhân moved with his family to Ho Chi Minh City at 7. His later studies had nothing to do with agriculture, so his understanding of seedlings, flowering, and fruiting in melon and tomato plants was very textbook-based. Yet the idea of an agricultural business had driven him since graduation.

As a student, Nhân traveled with friends to the Mekong Delta to visit clean vegetable growing model, and deeply concerned about farmers' production. The state has invested well in clean produce but has not helped find buyers. Supermarkets purchase limited amounts and select only the best; the rest cannot sell or sells cheaply, even below conventionally grown vegetables. Farmers therefore invest in clean vegetables only to return to their old methods.

That is also why Nhân always prepares everything so he can enter agricultural business when conditions allow. “But I have to do something new and different, learning from earlier approaches. Today, even farms that use advanced technology and meet standards still do not achieve the selling prices they expect because of consumers’ circumstances and habits. I want to create a product that not only gives customers confidence in its quality, but also lets them learn firsthand how a melon or a bunch of vegetables is produced.”, Nhân said.

The “Accompanying Farmers” cantaloupe garden, the result of an unconventional farming idea from a young owner born in the 1980s. Photo: Vuông Tròn

When he proposed interactive farming, participants immediately responded enthusiastically. At the same time, HCMC had projects supporting clean production through the Business Incubator High-Tech Agriculture under the Ho Chi Minh City High-Tech Agricultural Park, and his team's proposal was accepted. From there, Vuông Tròn Trading Co., Ltd. was established.

However, from conceiving the idea to implementing this production and business model, the team endured many hardships.

When they started, none of the 3 members had agricultural knowledge (2 had economics backgrounds and 1 was in IT), so production was extremely difficult. Plants became diseased and died, and spoiled products had to be discarded. “For a long time, we had no revenue and bought every bag of fertilizer on credit. When our capital was depleted, someone offered to buy the business at a profitable price. But somehow we remained confident we would succeed and tried to keep the farm going.”

After much hard work, resourcefulness, and learning from other producers' experience, an agricultural engineer finally agreed to collaborate. A more suitable crop was selected: the Bảo Khuê cantaloupe variety, with attractive, delicious fruit highly favored by consumers.

After successful propagation, each seedling is sold to customers for 250.000 đồng. The farm cares for the plant until it bears fruit and the fruit is harvested, guaranteeing at least 1 fruit weighing 2-2,5 kg per plant after 3 months.

Each tree has a complete record, including a nameplate, planting date, and expected harvest time… Photo: Vuông Tròn

Besides arranging monthly visits for customers to see and care for their trees, the farm notifies them at harvest time so they can pick the produce themselves. For customers unable to harvest, farm staff will do it for them and deliver the produce to their homes. If a tree fails to produce the expected results, the farm will notify the customer and issue a refund or replace the tree for the next season.

‘When I first proposed the idea, many people said I was crazy. If people want fruit or vegetables, they go to the market; no one has the patience to wait 3 months to eat a melon. Many worried that our investment model would not work and carried many risks, but somehow I still believed I could do it.’

Believing it could be done, Nhân and his friends succeeded. From a few dozen customers in the first round, orders grew to more than 200 customers by season 4. One first-time customer immediately ordered 60 trees. By season 6, after deducting costs, the company was profitable.

Nhân says his company currently dares to cultivate only 6,000 m2 per crop, so supply is insufficient. In practice, Vuông Tròn’s main customers remain restaurants and hotels, while this ‘unique’ retail model serves to build the brand. The company also currently focuses only on customers in Ho Chi Minh City, since those farther away cannot readily visit the growing area.

The customer base is still limited and concentrated among those with financial means. They care about health, so even though the product costs twice as much as a melon at the market, they are willing to pay.

A customer picks a cantaloupe weighing more than 2 kg after waiting 3 months. Photo: Zen Nguyễn

Nhân also says Vuông Tròn does not focus on supermarkets; his approach is to deliver directly to retail customers, the end consumers. He considers this the most sustainable way to secure sales without dependence on traders or intermediaries. “With good retailing and customer care, good products, and genuine credibility, existing customers will naturally bring us new ones. We are young and willing to put in extra effort to satisfy consumers.”, he said.

His main product is still cantaloupe, and he is moving toward organic vegetable production. According to Nhân, the plant-care arrangement he operates is only suitable for high-value crops harvested 1 time, such as cantaloupes, watermelons and certain vegetables. It is very difficult to grow chilies or eggplants this way because they require repeated harvests and are hard to monitor during cultivation.

Asked why he chose an agricultural business, the owner born in the 1980s shared: “When I graduated, one question was always on my mind: what kind of business should I start? In Vietnam, if you search Google for computers, electronics, construction, or real estate, you will find many brands. But agriculture—specifically growing clean vegetables and fruit—is very rare, even though ours is an agricultural country. With that thought, I chose agriculture and decided to approach it differently.”

Compiled from: Zing News

Chương trình liên quan tại YUP Education: X-Startup – khóa học khởi nghiệp «Khởi Chánh Nghiệp» · The Journey – lộ trình phát triển doanh nhân

2 quả dưa để cạnh nhau với 2 mức giá khác nhau, khách hàng chọn quả nào?
