Bill Gates once said, “There is no such thing as a free lunch,” and in reality, quite literally, some entrepreneurs have dared to spend tens of thousands or even millions of USD to have lunch with world-famous billionaires.

On 15/4, Apple CEO Tim Cook launched an auction for those wishing to have lunch and talk with him at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, USA. The highest bidder also has the opportunity to receive 2 VIP tickets to attend important Apple events.

This is the third consecutive year Tim Cook has held an auction to raise money for the Robert F. Kennedy Center's human rights fund.

Charitybuzz estimated the final auction price would be 100,000 USD. However, as of today, after 2 days of bidding, the amount has reached 165,000 USD. The final figure could be much higher because the auction runs until 6/5 (3 weeks).

The previous two auctions, in 2013 and 2014, raised hundreds of thousands of USD, so many people expect the same this year.

In 2013, a mysterious entrepreneur spent as much as 610,000 USD simply to have coffee with Tim Cook, and in 2014, an anonymous person paid 330,000 USD for a one-hour lunch with Apple's CEO.

Spending 2,2 million USD to have lunch with Warren Buffett

In 2014, many people were surprised when the auction for lunch with Warren Buffett closed at as much as USD 2.2 million.

The auction was organized jointly by the US charity GLIDE and online shopping site eBay, with the proceeds subsequently used for charitable activities.

Under the rules, each year's winner may invite 7 friends to lunch with billionaire Buffett at Smith & Wollenksy restaurant in New York.

The winner of this auction was a mysterious Singaporean businessman, Andy Chua from Singapore. GLIDE provided almost no further information about his identity, in accordance with its rules.

However, 2.2 million USD is not a record: in 2012, someone spent nearly 3.5 million USD to have lunch with this legendary investor.

Since the first auction in 2000, the price of a meal and informal conversation with famous billionaire Warren Buffet has risen exponentially. Starting at USD 25,000, it reached USD 650,100 in 2007 and USD 2,110,100 in 2008. The record high came in 2012 with the striking figure of USD 3,456,789.

The lunch at News Corp's headquarters in New York had a starting bid of 25.000USD, to raise funds for building a technical university in Jerusalem.

In 2009, Charitybuzz successfully auctioned a lunch with Ben Bernake, former chairman of the US Federal Reserve (Fed), for 70,500 USD.
