‘Before going to South America, I had thought about this.
Before spending a night in the Amazon rainforest, swimming with dolphins in a river with crocodiles, swinging on the death-defying swing at the end of the world in Ecuador, and drinking wine on a volcanic crater in Chile… I had thought about this.
Before each flight, just before takeoff, I thought about this.
I thought, “What if this flight were to meet with disaster, and I never came back again..”
“What if I have an accident in the Amazon forest tonight and never return…”
“What if I… fall and hit my head while showering (!?) and never return…”
“What if I go to sleep, have a stroke and never return…”
“What if […] and I never return..”
“What if I die tomorrow and no longer exist in this world, no longer walk through this life…”
….
“… then what must I leave behind?”
The answer that came to me was this very book.
So before my recent trip to South America, before the succession of flights, before any of the risks could occur, I had quietly completed almost all of this book as early as July. Because it was not finished, I did not send the manuscript to the publisher.
I emailed the manuscript to my assistant and instructed them not to open it (and I am certain my assistant will always follow my instructions with integrity and dedication). I said that if everything remained fine, I would finish the revisions and send it to the publisher myself. But if some unfortunate risk or incident arose (you can never be certain about tomorrow, can you?), they should send it to the publisher on my behalf, work with them, and show them this email. They would know what to do next so the book would still reach those who needed it. And they must not forget to send it to my parents and family.
Whatever happens to me, I will ensure this book is born and reaches you.
And that will be REALITY.
