On 21/9, the first fresh mangoes originating from Đồng Tháp, Vietnam, went on sale at several stores and supermarkets in Perth, Western Australia, for 14.99 AUD/kg (around 255,000 dong). They were advertised as the “King of Green Mangoes – Available in Perth for the First Time.”

Green mangoes bound for Australia weigh 500–650 grams each, with smooth, unblemished skin and long stems to prevent sap leakage. They are grown using VietGAP procedures compatible with Australian standards.

This first tonne of mangoes was exported by Agricare Vietnam to test the market after Australia officially approved and opened its market to fresh Vietnamese mangoes. This was also the first company to export fresh lychees to the island nation. It also plans to export ripe mangoes, including Hòa Lộc mangoes, Cát Chu mangoes, and pink mangoes, to Australia.

Vietnam’s Consul General in Perth, Phùng Thế Long, said Vietnamese mangoes had received a fairly positive response from local consumers, especially the Vietnamese community.

He noted that Australia was also in mango season, so consumption of Vietnamese mangoes might be limited; during the off-season, from February onward, they would have more opportunities. At that time, Western Australia's market mainly offered mangoes imported from Mexico.

Meanwhile, the Vietnam Trade Office in Australia continues connecting businesses. Following lychees, mangoes are thus the second fresh Vietnamese fruit to enter Australia.

This country is expected to continue by approving Vietnamese dragon fruit in early 2017. Passion fruit, longan, and star apples… are also expected to be among Vietnam's specialty fruits entering this demanding market.
