The following success story comes from a domestic helper who lived in difficult circumstances. From an early childhood of extreme hardship, she rose to become someone many people deeply respect.

The success story of an orphan girl who worked as a domestic helper until age 16

Dương Thanh Thủy was born in 1961 and currently owns a well-known diversified group in Ho Chi Minh City. Yet few know that she endured an extremely difficult, tearful childhood. Once speaking to the press as 1 accomplished person with an admirable success story, Thủy recalled: “My father died when I was very young. Our family then went through many changes, so I lived independently from age 6, working as a domestic helper until I was 16 to survive. Sometimes, while cleaning my employer's refrigerator, I wondered when I would ever have enough money to buy one like it. When I opened it and saw so much delicious food, I wondered: even if I had a refrigerator, how would I afford the food?”

Her father, Dương Văn Quảng, was reportedly a Viet Cong member. He was arrested during an operation. To protect secrets, he firmly refused to disclose information and was shot by enemy troops only a few dozen meters from home. Dương Thanh Thủy lost her father when she was just two months old.

Her mother then remarried a landowner in Cà Mau. Ultimately, her mother had 3 husbands and 14 children.

“My extended family had as many as 18 siblings. But that also brought much suffering…” Thủy once confided. Later, under pressure from her stepfather, her mother sent four of the siblings back to their paternal hometown in Hóc Môn, Sài Gòn. Thủy was only 4. Living with aunts and uncles, she was already carrying younger children, cooking, and washing dishes at five or six. She then gained admission to medical and pharmaceutical university. But in her fourth year studying pharmacy, an unexpected event forced her to leave school and support her family through a crisis.

Through her skillful hands, scraps of yarn became eye-catching products sold in handicraft shops on Đồng Khởi Street. She then established her first shop.

Startup success with the Mis Ao Dai brand

In the 1990s, increasing numbers of Japanese tourists visited Ho Chi Minh City. Although her shop sold handicrafts, everyone who came in would ask: “Ao dzai, ao dzai…?”.

Noticing that Japanese people were captivated by the flowing Vietnamese áo dài, which suited their bearing, she developed the idea of selling áo dài and adopted a new company brand, Miss Aodai. That was how Miss Aodai was born
