Hello, Tuấn! Did you decide from the outset that business would be your long-term path?
As a child, I dreamed of becoming a scientist who could invent things to benefit humanity. However, after being admitted to Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, various circumstances led me into business. In particular, Vietnam's Internet environment was still in its “infancy,” opening up many attractive opportunities.
So a few friends and I started a business project to seize that opportunity immediately. Looking back now, I think what scientists and entrepreneurs have in common is that they all have “inventions” (effective business ideas in an entrepreneur's case) aimed at changing this world for the better.
What was the first business project Tuấn undertook?
At age 19, my friends and I established a project that became the predecessor of a company specializing in Digital Marketing services. The project began with a vision of building ‘Vietnam’s first events social network’—a place bringing together event organizers and attendees.
The name sounds simple, but the business model is actually relatively complex. We have to successfully establish a community and then gather enough data to ‘redefine the value of organizing and attending events in Vietnam,’ thereby generating profit from this model.

What difficulties have you encountered?

We mainly ran into technical problems. As a project launched early at that time, far ahead of the market, it was… never completed by us (laughs). Although our first project failed, its output gave us research findings and profound value. We changed direction and became an agency providing digital communications services.
Tuấn, where did the idea for home healthcare services originate? Why did you choose the name HELP?
While I was co-running the digital company, a family crisis made me rethink my business. When I learned my father had cancer, I was deeply saddened and kept wondering: “Can I do anything to help people with the same illness as my father?”

It prompted me to explore further—not only the ‘illness’ of patients, but also that of our country’s healthcare system itself. I developed the ‘Personal Doctor–Healthcare at Home’ model, meaning each person would have a personal doctor monitoring their health at the most reasonable cost, both preventing illness and reducing treatment costs in the long run.
HELP means helping. In choosing this name, I hoped it could “help” people with a more proactive and effective healthcare solution.

This model is still quite new in Vietnam. Tuấn, what did you do to gain people's trust and encourage them to use the service?
When operating an entirely new business model, the greatest resistance lies in customers' minds and the community's perceptions. Changing these is always the most difficult and costly task. Businesses then usually have to undertake what is called “educating” the market. In healthcare especially, word-of-mouth marketing plays a very important role.
If I bring appropriate value to others, it will multiply. As a result, HELP grew very strongly, at around 300% annually. In 2011, HELP was officially recognized as a “social enterprise,” and I became 1 of Vietnam’s 15 exemplary social entrepreneurs recognized by the British Council, CSIP and The One Foundation.
As someone still quite young, Tuấn, do you feel pressure leading organizations you founded, such as JCI and BNI?
I want to use tools and systems from world-class entrepreneurial associations and organizations to develop myself, then help transform Vietnam's business culture into one of mutual support. Once you understand your purpose, key leadership roles always bring pressure but also meaning, helping you mature.
How did you prove yourself to earn the trust of partners and colleagues?
For me, earning people’s trust requires more than good intentions. It requires constant practice through personal experience and learning as much as possible from others to improve character and skills.

We understand you also founded YUP Entrepreneurship Academy and teach there directly. As an instructor, do you find the role different from being a businessperson and leader?
An entrepreneur’s task is to make a business more profitable. That requires employees to be more productive, so leaders must help others work better. I therefore see a close connection between entrepreneurs, leaders and instructors. Their ‘titles’ differ, but the core principles are the same.
Teaching and learning are a two-way interaction. What have you learned from the young people who have studied or are studying with you? Conversely, what core lesson do you usually teach them when they start a business, Tuấn?
I learn many valuable things from my participants, because business is an endless world and human creativity has no limits. Each participant is a “little teacher” to me: they help me become better than yesterday and better tomorrow than today. Anyone who helps us improve is surely our teacher.
The core lesson I often share is not yet about the skills of founding and running a business, nor about tricks or techniques for getting rich quickly. It is about identifying your own goal when starting a business. Entrepreneurship is a path toward the destination I need to reach, so I will choose that path when it helps me achieve what I want.

With so many responsibilities “in hand” at once, how did Tuấn balance his life?
When tired, I listen to favorite music, watch cute animated films, meet friends to talk or spend time with loved ones. A sound sleep also works well for relieving stress. I no longer run the company every day, so I can organize my time more freely. I can pursue interesting projects, meet entrepreneurs or sit over coffee discussing ‘changing the world’ without worrying about making ends meet as before. I feel very happy with what I am doing.
What principle do you always live by?

It means trying to break the rules, leave the beaten path and create new solutions.

At this point, do you consider yourself successful? Tuấn, do you plan to venture into another new field and conquer it as well?

Of course, many things in medicine and other fields have reached “equilibrium” yet still bring no real value or benefit to the community. These are “market failures” and “social failures” waiting for us to “roll up our sleeves and solve them.”

I think success means doing what I love for the people I love and receiving their understanding and support. It also means doing something that makes me proud, has a positive impact on someone and lets me help change individuals or society for the better.

Thank you, Tuấn! Wishing you ever greater success!
