With a net worth of USD 1.94 billion, Nguyễn Thị Phương Thảo, General Director of Vietjet Air, has just entered the list of the world’s 100 most powerful women. At the APEC CEO Summit 2017 on the morning of 9/11, she shared her views on connecting for growth.

The female billionaire expressed her ambition to build what she called a “consumer airlines” airline. What makes this aviation model distinctive is that it not only serves passenger and freight transportation needs, but also creates its own technology-based ecosystem.

“I call my airline a consumer airline. This new airline will offer a range of products serving passengers’ consumer needs and could also provide financing, sell insurance, offer e-commerce services…,” Ms. Thảo said, describing it as a new concept compared with the conventional definition of an airline.

After saying this, Ms. Thảo turned to ask Walmart Vice Chairman Scott Price: ‘Is Walmart ready to supply goods to millions of Vietjet customers with differing logistics requirements?’

In response, billionaire Scott Price said he was very willing to do so, not only for Vietjet customers but for the entire Vietnamese market. Walmart currently has no retail network in Vietnam.

Ms. Thảo said that over the past 5 years, Vietjet had risen to lead the domestic market with a share of around 40%.

As evidence, the female CEO said Vietjet was a multinational company with 30 nationalities. It already had 23 international routes and was working to expand further toward its goal of “connecting the skies.”

Phương Thảo emphasized that profit matters for a young airline like Vietjet, but the company aims to create new value for the community. Travel and transportation costs must therefore remain low, saving money for people and businesses and stimulating economic and tourism growth…

The CEO also expressed ambitions to connect with global airlines from Japan, South Korea, Quatar, and even the United States and Europe, making travel more convenient for customers instead of offering only short 2-3-hour trips.

In Vietnam, following VJC’s listing on HOSE, Thảo is currently the stock market’s wealthiest female billionaire. With rapidly growing assets, she has also become the world’s 1,249th-richest person, with a net worth of USD 1.94 billion, according to Forbes’ newly updated list.
