Dr. Nguyễn Tuấn Quỳnh: Use love as a verb

As a student at the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, Nguyễn Tuấn Quỳnh achieved a great deal in his studies and scientific research. He received a consolation prize in the 1991 Economic Solutions competition, second prize in the 1994 student research competition at university level, and simultaneous funding for 2 projects under the Eureka Award.

Tuấn Quỳnh not only excelled academically but also participated actively in Youth Union and student association activities. He was a member of the 5th Central Executive Committee of the Vietnam National Union of Students and vice president of the Student Association at the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City.

After graduating, Nguyễn Tuấn Quỳnh chose not to remain at the university, instead taking a job to earn money and gain practical experience. He began in Saigon Petro’s import-export department. Alongside learning the professional skills needed to perform well, he decided to continue his education. In 1995, he ranked second in the entrance examination for the business administration master’s program at Ho Chi Minh City Open University, graduating in 1998. Three consecutive years of working by day and studying at night helped him develop organizational abilities and a systematic working method.

What he learned at university also helped Tuấn Quỳnh perform his professional duties well at the company. His studies seemed to be going smoothly when, in 1999, he topped the doctoral entrance examination at the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, scoring a perfect 10/10 in his specialized subject. His proposed doctoral research topic in finance was ‘Solutions for making the Vietnamese currency freely convertible.’ But Tuấn Quỳnh then encountered an obstacle that forced him to abandon his doctoral studies.

The reason was that his master's degree was in business administration, while his doctorate was in finance, so Tuấn Quỳnh had to study and retake exams in 8 graduate-level finance subjects. During this period, his work at Saigon Petro became extremely busy: he had been promoted to Assistant to the General Director and then Deputy Head of Gas Sales. He paused his studies to focus on work because, when he took charge of gas business operations in 2001, Saigon Petro faced enormous difficulties. Sales volume had fallen by more than half, customers had lost confidence in the company, and so many gas cylinders were returned that warehouses were full with no room left. In 2003, Nguyễn Tuấn Quỳnh enrolled in a Doctor of Business Administration program offered by Columbia Commonwealth University in the US.

In 8-2005, Nguyễn Tuấn Quỳnh made a turning-point decision in his life: he left Saigon Petro to become Deputy General Director of Saigon Gas Joint Stock Company. His relatives and colleagues were all surprised. Some friends considered it a mistake because his future at Saigon Petro was very bright; he was a young cadre being groomed for future leadership there. Moreover, Tuấn Quỳnh was a Party member, making the move from a state-owned company to a joint-stock company in the same industry highly “sensitive.”

For him, however, changing companies and working environments was a difficult but necessary decision. Tuấn Quỳnh wanted more challenges and deeper involvement in business, as well as greater control over himself and the chance to build wealth.

Tuấn Quỳnh is also Sales and Marketing Director of Tân Tiến Plastic Joint Stock Company. Working in 2 important roles at 2 companies requires considerable effort. Nevertheless, his academic results have not suffered: he completed his doctorate with a perfect score.

On 9-7-2006 in Penang, Malaysia, Dr. Nguyễn Tuấn Quỳnh was honored with his university’s outstanding student award. It was the first time a Vietnamese student had received the award. Explaining why he pursued a doctorate, Tuấn Quỳnh said he dreamed of becoming a researcher and university lecturer.

At 34, with a PhD in economics and running the business operations of 2 companies, Nguyễn Tuấn Quỳnh represents a generation of dynamic young entrepreneurs who are eager to learn and passionate about work. One of his life mottos is: “Live in the active voice, objectively, in the present tense, in the first person, and use the verb: love.” We hope Dr. Nguyễn Tuấn Quỳnh will achieve further success in life in the time ahead.
